Education – A Parent’s Responsibility

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

One would be foolish to think that our education system meets the requirements of every child that enters at the tender age of five or six and leaves after thirteen years. However, some parents actually think that our schools are totally responsible for the education of their children. Parents who believe this may be putting their children at a disadvantage.

Without question, the majority of what a young child learns will take place in school, but there is also much more that children will learn, and must learn, outside the classroom. It is my opinion that some of the most important lessons a child will learn are taught in the home. This means that parents have a responsibility to be active in their child’s education.

Two important questions follow from this statement. First, why should parents be an active participant in their child’s education and second, what can they do to help their children be successful in school? Two very important considerations, yet many parents fail to recognize the importance of being involved in their child’s education.

To answer the first question as to why parents should be involved in their child’s education, simply look at the numbers. One classroom teacher and twenty-five to thirty young minds to fill with knowledge can be a very difficult feat to accomplish. The ratio of teachers to students is just too high and although difficult to acknowledge, some students simply will fall between the cracks in the system. Parents are the safety net for their children yet too many of them fail to realize this important fact. The greatest resource any classroom teacher can utilize is the parents.

The second question deals with what parents can do to help their children develop in conjunction with the efforts of the education system. The one simple thing that parents should do to assist in the formal education of their child is to take an interest in all aspects of their child’s school activities: academics, extra-curricular activities and relationships. This means help them with their homework and know what they are doing in class. It means getting them involved in school sports teams, music, drama, clubs etc. Finally it means knowing how your child interacts with others, and if they need direction you are there for them.

Some of the most important lessons of life are taught in the home. Parents should not expect some of those lessons to be taught in our schools. They must take responsibility and take an active part in the education of their children. After twenty-five years of being part of the education system, one can see why some students are successful while others struggle. In many cases, the education received in the home is the difference.

Why Continuing Education Program Is Important

Why continuing education?

Would you go to a doctor, mechanic, or even a hairdresser that does not keep up on what’s new in their field? I don’t think so.

My sister is a hairdresser. She gets magazines and books all the time with the latest hairstyles and new techniques. She reads books all the time to improve her people skills, marketing, etc. She even gets DVDs sent to her monthly so she can watch the new haircuts being done.

She does not look at the expense. She considers everything an investment. An investment in herself and in her business. She said one haircut or one new customer will more than pay for a CD or DVD, or even a book.

I consider the personal development and leadership program we are involved in the best investment I can possibly make in myself. I also get CDs and other books every month for spiritual growth from other sources.

I grab up all the great books at yard sales that I can find that are on our top 50 book list or a book that I’ve already read that helped me. I loan a good book to someone who needs it and when they bring it back they ask for another one that I would recommend.

I’m learning all the time and it doesn’t cost me a lot. Look at the price of college tuition or even 1 textbook.

I never went to college, but I tell people I am attending Leadership University whenever I want to. All I have to do is put in a cd and I’m there! I always have a CD playing in the kitchen first thing in the morning and every time I am in the kitchen.

Whenever I am in the car I turn my car into a rolling university on wheels by putting a CD. How much commuting time do you have everyday? Turn off the radio and put in a great CD by a proven leader or motivational speaker. You might just hear something that will make a difference in your life that day.

2 CDs a day will help keep the negative attitude away.

Education, Meaning, Aim and Function

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

The process of defining the meaning of Education is to problematize its lexicology and re-conceptualize it. An example is illustrated from real day-life. A multinational company involved in the making of advanced pharmaceutical products decides to get rid of its wastes in a cheaper manner rather then waste-treat them. They dump the wastes around the coast of a poorer African continent based on the company’s policy of maximum profits. Are the board of directors in the company educated? They are, one can assume for rhetorical comfort. An illiterate, native-tribe living in the rainforest jungles of Papua New Guinea doesn’t know the meaning of Environmental jargon: ‘Reduce, Recycle & Reuse’; yet, they conserve and sustain the environment, based on the level of skills known to them. Are the people of the rainforest uneducated just because they are illiterate?

The problems connected with narrowness of meaning called Education emerge within the contextuality of the above mentioned examples, and the conceptual difficulties involved in attempting to centre meaning upon Education is by all means complicated. So the meaning of education has to emerge from this narrowness to the broadness of meaning. In its broadness of meaning Education is the process of ‘stimulating’ the ‘person’ with Experiences, Language and Ideology, beginning from the time of birth and continuing till the time of death. This meaning of Education would give rise to the Aim, as disseminating formally, non-formally, culturally, nationally, scientifically and ritually-skills, literacy, knowledge, norm and values, as pedagogies of the institutions giving rise to the aim. This aim would be directly related to the perpetuation of that Society as an ideological structure. Aim would again determine the Function of Education The function of Education would be thus related to how meaning and aims are synchronized into processes called experience of application. The thesis statement of this paper is developed on three levels-one, the meaning of education as the stimulation of person a with language, experiences and ideology-two, aim of education being dissemination and perpetuation, and three, function, as synchronized processing.

The development of the Meaning of Education as a stimulation of a person from birth to death with language, experiences and ideology makes the person, a Being of the process as an Ontology. This process starts right from birth as affective language, for example, a mother’s cooing, to a process where the person becomes a cognitive structure, as I-the speaking subject or ego-subject. Here, the individual undergoes the norms, traditions of the society’s culture and learns to adapt and appropriate the symbolic codes of the society. Along with this process, the individual also learns to formalize his or her adaptation and appropriation to a literacy process i.e. developing skills and competencies. Thus we find that the Meaning of Education to be multi-leveled as well as multiple -oriented, through both formalist and non-formalist institutions of society. The formalist institutions which procreate the Meaning of Education are the Schools, the Government, Law and Order etc. Other formalist institutions like family, religion and native-traditions can work both openly as well as silently to orient an individual to the meaning of experience as the educated. For example a mother’s oral transmission of a folk song to the daughter is silent whereas a marriage function is a more open aspect as the performance of a culture’s pedagogy. Thus language and experiences generate the codes for that society to experience the Meaning of Education, making possible for ideologies to exist.

Thus the meaning of Education would give rise to the Aim, as disseminating formally, non-formally, culturally, nationally, scientifically and ritually-skills, literacy, knowledge, norms and values as pedagogies. Dissemination would mean the spreading of the Society’s cultural norms and values. It would also mean the spreading of Nationalism as democratic-pluralism, multiculturalism, diversity and celebration or its reverse as intolerance, authoritarianism through pedagogies; it is also the development of systematized pedagogies- promoted as theoretical and applied within the Society’s Scientific and Technocratic institutions.

The Aim of Education would be directly related to the perpetuation of that Society as an ideological structure. The contemporariness of perpetuation would answer the questions related to the aim of Education being: empowerment, sustainability, preservation, minimization, conflict resolution, creativity and innovation.

The Aim of Education as well as the Meaning of Education give rise to the Function of Education as meaning, that is the synchronized processing of Aim and Function into a materialist, operational process. Synchronization of the Meaning and Aim of education takes places at various levels action. They are Making, Transmission and Implementation and Cultural-Simulation. At the Making level, the Function of Education is connected with ‘Policy Formulation’ related to the Meaning and Aim of Education. Policy Formulation can reflect on multiple issues like development, sustainability, scientific progress, promotion of rights, dignity and culture, energy management, disaster management, peace and conflict resolution. Once policies are made they are transmitted and implemented through the society’s institutional structures like the legal system, the education system, the society’s welfare management etc. Cultural-simulation takes place both formally and non -formally as society’s religious, cultural and familial institutions. They perform many social and cultural roles within the home as well celebration or mourning for an occasion.

To conclude, it is pertinent to summarize the thesis developed that is, the Meaning of Education has been broadened to involve the stimulation of a Person, with Language, Experiences and Ideology. The Meaning of Education becomes vital to the Aim of Education as dissemination and perpetuation. The Meaning and Aim of Education becomes synchronized into the Function of education as Making, Transmission and Participation.

How Much Does a Nursing Continuing Education Course Cost?

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Many nurses are well aware of the necessity to take continuing education courses. Not only do employers love to see a continuously updated education, but the vast majority, if not all, states mandate that nurses take continuing education courses to be eligible for re-licensing. Put another way, without taking a certain number of continuing education units (or CEUs for short), a nurse cannot renew their license to practice in the state. So, clearly, taking courses is of absolute necessity to all nurses. However, the big question that most people have is how much does a nursing continuing education course cost? Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to this question as the prices vary greatly between institutions. With that said, it is often possible to break down the prices into a couple of major categories: those taken at professional nursing associations and those taken from extraneous online places.

A professional nursing continuing education course offered by a respected association such as the American Nursing Credentialing Center will likely run you in the $100s, if not more. Online PowerPoint courses are typically the cheapest with the rates starting from a hundred or two and working up from there. Conferences are easily the most expensive as they encompass an entry fee plus plane fare if the conference isn’t being hosted in your home city. Of course, the cash isn’t necessarily wasted. Conferences are often one of the best continuing education opportunities that are available as they are usually filled with speakers who are experts in their respective field.

Online courses taken from “random” web sites are often significantly cheaper. Many sites that are credentialed by a major association offer subscription services. This means that you can take as many CEUs in a year as you’d like for a dirt cheap price of probably under $100 per year. Naturally, in terms of the education, you get what you pay for. They certainly won’t have the same informative level as you’d expect from a leader in the field giving a seminar on his/her area of expertise. However, if its the credit hours you’re after, these sites will offer a nursing continuing education course at extremely low prices. Just make sure that you verify that the site is credentialed by an association that your state accepts. If you don’t check this out, you may find that you end up wasting a lot of time and effort without much return.

So, the answer to the question “how much does a nursing continuing education course cost?” is very difficult to answer as it highly depends on what you’re looking for. On the one hand, you can get dirt cheap credit hours that may not be particularly informative or substantial. On the other hand, if you’re looking for highly engaging events, you might be better served by looking at your association for conferences and other meetings that are happening in your area. These will usually provide better information than online sites.

A Brief History of Online Education

Friday, July 29th, 2011

The internet has given us many gifts throughout the years – from music and video game codes to not so G-rated material. Therefore, it is no surprise that e-learning has made such a big splash in the web world. Within the past ten years, online education and internet training has provided many people with a new incentive to learn.

During the early 80′s, e-training was just starting to become a potential creation. Companies and educational institutes were strictly hiring instructors to train their students. This was because computers were only beginning to grow, therefore making it difficult to come up with any other plan. These instructors were great at the time because it allowed training to be very hands on, especially since students were able to interact with their classmates and visually see the lessons. However, the problem with having just instructors was that there was a lot of blank time in between. Students were not being able to learn the material on their own time, thus difficulty set in when training with hoards of other people.

Luckily, as the computer industry started to expand, e-training was becoming a reality. For the next ten years, multimedia was at everyone’s fingertips. Companies were just starting to use PowerPoint; a program that allowed people to create visually enhanced presentations. Video games and other multimedia programs were also popping up, thus resulting in a technology overhaul. As these advances continued, online education was only a step away.

The first type of online education was in the mid 1990′s. This was when the internet was a great success, and multimedia was being taken to another level. The first few e-training companies dedicated their services to mainly businesses who did not want to hire trainers. Although the online education courses were great for new employees who needed training, it was only the beginning of an uphill process. Education online was very slow, as pictures were small and the entire course was text based. Nevertheless, it was beginning to catch the eye of many.

As the 1990′s quickly ended, the millennium marked an entirely new period for technology. E-learning was finally on the map as online education courses were now very popular at colleges and businesses. Great streaming media, online video access, and fast web site servers made it possible for online education to make quite a splash. Students were also now able to learn from their homes during their own time, since working a job and going to school was quite a difficult task.

Today, online education has come a long way. Instructors are now being hired to solely teach online, which usually consists of being filmed for lesson videos. Companies are also hiring these online education programs, since a training session can not only be quick, but also be accessed at any time of the day or night. For many, it is a great opportunity because it gives us all more knowledge. We not only are able to get college degrees through this type of e-learning, but we also can have a life, without having to stay at the office overnight just to learn some material.

Teaching Children About Consequences

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

I was so fortunate to have had a wonderful parenting friend when my children were young. The one thing she was so strong about was consequences. There are always consequences.

I somehow grew up and entered into adulthood believing that consequences were negative and a bad thing.

This is not true at all. Each action we execute has a consequence. If we show our children patience, the consequence is they grow up feeling secure and loved. This is a very positive consequence of our actions.

Through this friend I learned how to teach my own children about consequences. When my kids were in a position of having to make a tough choice, we spoke about the consequence of each of their options. If my kids spoke up or chose not to speak up when they felt a wrong had been done, we would talk about the consequences of the two choices.

If a child does not do their homework there are consequences. They won’t be prepared for the upcoming test. They won’t get credit for homework completed and their teacher will form an opinion that they are someone who does not complete the work. On the flip side if homework is always done and always on time very often the teacher will give you a pass on the one occasion you don’t have the homework ready. These are the two consequences of doing or not doing homework.

What about friends? Who our children choose to be friends with has consequences. If they choose friends who are not trustworthy or rather flaky they will often be disappointed. If they choose friends who can keep secrets, who are supportive and who always come through our children will have a very different experience socially.

Talk about consequences with your children. Let them know that each of their actions can and will have a consequences. It’s amazing how much more thought we put into decisions when we consider the consequences.

Mothers Teaching Their Teens

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Life lessons can be taught through our own personal experiences, people we meet along the way, or the best people of all, our mothers. Being a teen is a crucial time period in our lives and can be beneficial when the mothers step in, teaching teens the best coping skills to attain while going through all of life’s lessons. Mothers teaching teens how to study, accomplishing tasks and learning how to be respectable young adults will be very important tools to use on their journey into the real world.

Teenagers can easily get caught up in drama at school and lose track of their priorities.
There are so many influences that may also arise in the everyday life of a teen. Mothers teaching teens how to use their best instincts to stay out of trouble and avoid negative peer pressure can help their teens in getting through bad situations. Mothers can also teach their teens about the importance of drug abuse and unprotected sex. Most teens feel more comfortable with their mothers in providing such information.

When it comes to mothers teaching teens about life lessons, they may also find it important to touch base with their child regularly. Teaching your teens that it is ok to not go along with what everyone else is doing can benefit them in the long run. Sometimes it is smarter to be the one who does not go to a party that may have underage drinking and drugs. Mothers can look out for their teens safety and well being by showing them that they care.

Mothers can also teach their teens about trust and the ability to know when to trust someone and when not to. Some situations can lead to being very dangerous ones. Teens may not use their judgment of character all too well if they were not taught by their mothers about people who are untrustworthy.

Another fantastic life skill to use for mothers teaching teens is, money skills. Teach your teens how to manage their money and bills. Perhaps you could try giving them a cell phone and letting them pay the bill. Or they can even learn a lot by just saving money for a specific item they would like to purchase. Since high school does not help our teens on this subject, then it is the mothers duty to teach them the ins and outs of money management. Money management is an extremely important skill to know when it is time to move out and be on your own for the first time.

There are endless amounts of skills and knowledge to be shared with your teens while they approach the tale end of their teen years and into the more complicated years of living in the adult world. Mothers can be a very useful and a great guiding source while teaching their teens all about life and what it has to offer. If you are a mother who is currently teaching your teens about life and its ups and downs, then just remember it will all be worth it in the end.

When you find that you need to start pursuing mental health continuing education, finding the right courses, seminars, or programs to earn the necessary credits can become challenging. Often you learn of seminars or courses covering the topics you need further training in after they have already filled. If you wish to stay current on the courses and seminars in your area, here are some sources you need to get to know well.

Professional Organizations

Are you a member of the appropriate professional organization for your career? For instance, have you joined the American Psychotherapy Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, or the American Psychiatric Association? Organizations such as these, and others more specifically tailored to the various branches in the field, all send out publications and magazines that, among other things, announce upcoming training opportunities.

The more professional organizations you join, the more likely it will be that you will know when the training you want to access comes your way. Be sure to find the organizations at your state level as well, as these will be more likely to have information about credit-earning opportunities close to your home and clinic.

Professional Magazines

Sometimes announcements about mental health continuing education are made in professional periodicals in the field. Teaching Degrees – When You’re Short On Time

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

While jobs are widely available for those with teaching degrees, and teaching degrees are now offered online as well as at traditional colleges and universities, deciding in which teaching field to specialize can be difficult. No matter which teaching degrees interest you, all of them will require several years of dedicated work to obtain.

Online Degree Programs

If getting a teaching degree online is the best option svailable to you, you will have to spend time researching the various online universities and their teaching degree programs. Consider hoe many online teaching degree courses you can comfortably fit into your schedule, and if those courses will be transferable to a traditional college or university if things chance and you want to pursue your teaching degree full-time.

Verify that the online school you are considering is accredited by the Distance Training and Education Council; the DTEC will let you know if that school’s teaching degrees are accepted under state teaching certification requirements. Talk to other students who have completed teaching degrees with the different online programs and see what their real-world experience has been in finding employment.

If, on the other hand, you are considering one of the teaching degrees offered by a traditional institution of higher learning, you can expect to take between four and five years to qualify. While this may be fine for those just out of high school at the beginning their adult lives, there are many people who would like to return to school to complete teaching degrees. Perhaps they are unhappy in their careers, or simply would like the security of teaching degrees to fall back on if, as is happening to more and more people, their current jobs are eliminated.

Accelerated Teaching Degrees

For those individuals, having to attend school for four or more years to get heir teaching degrees is not feasible. And many educational institutions, both online and traditional, recognize their dilemma and now offering accelerated teaching degree curricula.

Depending on the individual’s ability to work hard, and the classes available to him or here, accelerated teaching degree programs can be completed in less than two years. Designed for mature adults, the programs offer flexible scheduling and terms of shorter duration than the typical semesters or quarters on which normal teaching degree programs are structured.

Some colleges will give credit life and professional experience toward accelerated teaching degrees; this is true for both brick-and-mortar and online degree programs. But once again, make sure any online accelerated teaching degree program in which you are interested is accredited by the DETC. And if getting a teaching degree is designed to qualify you for a work promotion, make sure your company will also accept your online degree as legitimate.
