Special Education Advocates Role in Advocating For Children With Disabilities

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Are you the parent of a child with autism or other disability? Would you like to know what an advocate does in the special education process? Do you wonder if a special education advocate could help you in fighting for needed services, for your child? This article will explain what the role of a special education advocate is, and whether they could help you advocate for a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for your child.

There is currently no certification for special education advocates! This is the reason why it is sometimes difficult to find one that is knowledgeable, and has expertise in special education.

The role of a special education advocate is to:

1. Have a working knowledge of state and federal laws that cover special education, and know how to use them to advocate for children. Federal law is Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Each state is required to have a law that must comply with IDEA.

2. Understand different types of disabilities and have experience advocating for children of different disabilities

3. Take time to know the child, and work with the parent to determine what services and placement a child needs, and advocate for them! This may require the parent getting an independent educational evaluation with a qualified evaluator.

4. Educate parents as to research based practices, as well as best practices. IDEA requires, that curriculum and programs be scientifically research based, which parents need to understand.

5. Have knowledge of different school districts and also how to advocate with different personalities of special education personnel. People are all different and the advocate must understand the best way to deal with the different personalities.

6. Act in a professional manner, whenever possible, to help parents get needed special education services and placements for their child. A good advocate is firm and refuses to back down when intimidated by special education personnel.

7. Teach parents advocacy skills so that they may learn how to advocate for their child!

A special education advocate can be extremely helpful in advocating for your child. If you think an advocate could help you check out your local disability organizations, and see if they have an advocate on staff. Check organizations such as a Center of Independent Living, Parent Training and Advocacy Centers (available in all states). If you hire a private advocate make sure you check their credentials, and make sure that they have experience with children with your child’s type of disability. This will ensure that the advocate understands what your child needs, and will be able to advocate for them.

Teaching Children About Money Saving

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Money is a hard thing to come by these days. Jobs in this world are scarce because everyone is looking for one and the competition is stiff. You have to be at your best in finding a job and holding on to your money. The same goes for children. Parents should spend some time teaching children about money.

Is is necessary to teach them about money? You bet. Children want to have money of their own, when the finally learn what it is good for, and so they should. But, teaching them the right way is the most important thing. Money has value, and, if not used wisely, can be gone in an instant. This economy is a very good example of that.

Too many times have people seen families that have good cash flow just lavish their children with money and objects. And, when the money is gone, they just give them more. When they become adults they haven’t learned how to deal with less, and therefore are poor managers of money.

Those that are taught at an early age how to save their money, and spend it only when needed are going to be able to live on their own it leaner times. It is these children who are told to save their money for a rainy day and not spend needlessly that will survive in hard times.

Teaching children about money is a very wise thing to do for their future. It ensures they will become responsible and good money managers. Not teaching them the value of the dollar and saving will make sure that they are irresponsible and will rely on others to give them whatever they want.

They do not become independent and resourceful. Parents have a duty to their children to speak to them about proper spending and saving.

Continuing Education

Friday, April 29th, 2011

The most successful Internet businesspeople know the value of continuing education. For many, the term “continuing education” brings to mind college classrooms and long bookstore lines. However, the wisest Internet entrepreneurs see education in their everyday lives. They learn from their mistakes, draw on the success of others, and rely heavily on those around them.

Learn, Don’t Blame

Unsuccessful people will blame everyone else for their lack of failure instead of taking a harder look at themselves and their own methodology. “Internet millionaires learn a lesson from the things that don’t work,” says Matt Bacak, a successful Internet entrepreneur who coaches others in business and marketing strategy. “They use that education to better their efforts.” If you want to be successful, you need to turn every loss into a win. Every mistake is an opportunity for education.

Attend Seminars

Business-oriented seminars are held often in nearly ever city in the country. Attending seminars gives you the latest, up-to-date information on what is working for others, what isn’t, and what trends are hottest. They also provide an excellent opportunity for networking with other entrepreneurs.

“I go to a lot of marketing seminars,” Bacak says. “I know that the key to my business is marketing and I know that I can never learn too much. My most valuable learning experiences have come from seminars. If a seminar only gives you one nugget of information, one viable idea, it can make you money. That’s worthwhile.”

Model Success Stories

Why reinvent the wheel? Thousands of successful businesspeople have come before you, and they have a wealth of knowledge to impart. “Internet millionaires model other Internet millionaires,” says Bacak. “They apply the approaches of those they admire to their own products.” Tried and true techniques already exist. The smartest entrepreneurs are those who aren’t closed off to the methods of others. By buying products or subscribing to newsletters published by businesspeople who already have a proven record of success, you can learn to adapt your own methods to model theirs.

Build a Team

“You can’t do this alone,” says Bacak. “You have to have faith in yourself, and you have to have drive. But you also have to have faith in others.” Bacak says that it is essential to build a solid team around yourself, consisting of peers, friends and family. “Getting rich is a team sport,” he explains. “I did not get to where I am today all by myself.”

Electrical Engineering is the oldest branch and it has an alliance with the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering. Online degree programs help the students as well as working professions also.

How degree online is best for a technical students?

There are engineers who have earned a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering in areas that include electronics, electrical engineering, or computer engineering. A junior engineer may spend almost a year or two on the job learning of the company’s products and electrical circuit designing procedures before choosing a technical specialty. Job responsibilities include designing, development, and implementation of products or systems. Research program helps in creating new ideas. It provides a number of challenges ranging from problem recognization, rectifications, and the selection of appropriate technical solutions, product materials, testing equipment, and procedures that helps in manufacturing a safe product that is economical and having high-performance products and providing excellent services. An electrical engineer needs to choose a couple of technical aspects of a position along with management responsibilities. The technical expertise that is required for management is increasing because of the technical boom in engineering, technology, and science.

A Bachelor of Engineering Degree with a specialty in electrical engineering does serve as a starting point for engineering professionals. The problem-solving skills required in an electrical engineering program are termed as an extraordinarily valuable asset. The same skills will equip you to pursue leadership roles in your professional circles outside the workplace.

In addition to the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering, a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering serves as an appropriate base for different allied fields. It includes Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Aeronautical Engineering.

Here are some typical job functions for Electrical Engineers:
The best way to assess career opportunities is to look at the production model of the company you want to work for. In a small company, students need to be proficient in several responsibilities and have restricted capital resources. The small number of employees needs to be balanced by the quality analysis of the rights and its impact on individual ideas, abilities, and skills.

In a large corporation, it is noticed that virtually all categories of positions are found, and there is a tremendous opportunity to specialize in a given area of interest. Big time organizations tend to offer numerous training programs with a greater stability, career growth, and more capital and equipment support. Many large companies tend to move more slowly than smaller companies.

It’s a common scenario everywhere that employment opportunities and career paths are affected by changes in the economy and political shifts. The engineering profession, like other occupations is affected by the stock prices, defence policies, import-export as well as investment tax policies. The skill set required in engineering that is required elsewhere in the world may alter the demand for your own expertise – favorably or unfavorably. While planning your career, keep in mind that opportunities may change with the times. Out of so many degrees online, it is advisable to the students to choose the right educational program.

Mental Health Continuing Education Formats

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

No matter which health care field you are in, you will find that you must pursue education after college and post-college training in order to maintain your competitive edge and often to become certified as well. If you need mental health continuing education, you will find a wide range of formats available to you. By choosing the format that best fits your schedule, you can continue to meet the needs of your patients while pursuing the education vital to your career.

Online Courses

Online courses offer one of the most convenient ways to pursue a new certification or simply refresh your mind about topics important to your career field. Online mental health continuing education allows you to study on your own time schedule. If you need to be in the office for a 12-hour day, you can postpone study for the next day when you have few patients scheduled. You can read or listen to a lecture on your lunch break, or you can finish the entire course in a short time frame to earn your credits quickly. If flexibility is what you need, the online courses will work well.

Evening Classes

Some times the best way to ensure that you get the mental health continuing education that you need is to sign up for an evening class or two. Set aside one or two evenings a week, dedicate them as time spent furthering your training, and then use those evenings to attend a course at a college in your area. It may take a while to earn a certificate or complete a degree on this schedule, but you should be able to get enough credits to maintain your certification, while still keeping your schedule free to help your patients.

Seminars

Seminars provide mental health continuing education in a condensed format. Instead of returning to the university week after week, you set aside a day or two to hear speakers talk about hot topics in the psychotherapy field. You come away with a wealth of information covering many topics, as well as a few credits to add to your resume. When you attend a seminar, the time spent away from the office yields valuable information and practical tools you can bring back to the clinic to implement with your patients.

Online Seminars

Sometimes the best speakers and trainers do not come to your area. Rather than traveling long distances to find a seminar, see if you can find online seminars, or “webinars” that cover the topics you need to learn more about. This combines the flexibility of online coursework with the condensed training found in a seminar. Best of all, you do not have to leave home to earn your mental health continuing education credits.

Each of these formats has benefits and drawbacks. Some require an ongoing time commitment, while others may require you to close up shop for a few days. You must weigh these benefits and drawbacks carefully as you decide which format for training best fits your needs.

Teaching Respect and Values in Today’s Society

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

The girl’s jaw dropped in horror as the police officer spoke these words:

“Don’t go there. Have you any idea how many kids have been stabbed in the past year? They’ll kill you as soon as look at you. They have no respect for life.”

The mother breathed a sigh of relief. She had come in to school to seek my help, as I was her daughter’s Guidance Counsellor. We needed to convince the girl that the places she was frequenting were putting her very life in danger.

Fortunately a police officer was in school that day to speak to a Social Education class – and I got him to sit in on the interview.

So where was the young girl going that put her life in such peril? What underground haunts were enticing her?

None other than an area of the city where two school friends lived. But as you may guess, it was an area rife with drug abuse and its attendant crimes. Many people there had lost respect both for themselves and for life in general.

So how do we teach respect and values in a society that’s rapidly becoming valueless?

Believe it or not, it’s relatively easy!

All we have to do is go back to basics. Remember what Grandma used to say? – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

This might sound a bit ‘corny’ or ‘naff’ in today’s world, but if ever a saying deserved to be revitalised and repeated again and again, this is it!

Today our kids need to learn RESPECT for themselves; for other people; for other people’s rights, customs and valid beliefs; for property; for materials; and for the earth itself.

The more people who do this, the more we will have a counter-balance to the uncaring and disrespectful trends we see all around.

Yes, that’s all very well, but HOW do we do it?

In two ways – and as I said, it’s easy!

First and foremost MODEL the values and respect you wish your children to develop.

That’s it. SHOW them by your own lifestyle. You don’t even need to articulate these values – but as we’ll see later, discussing them and commenting on them can make an even bigger impact.

Many successful parents are neither educated nor articulate, and they say very little. They let their actions speak louder than words.

There’s nothing new in this. To use an old-fashioned phrase, these parents give a good example. (Some of today’s psychologists think they’ve come up with a new approach when they talk about ‘modeling appropriate behaviour patterns’. Yes..!)

To be fair, many parents I talk to are unaware of the potential they have to influence their kids. It comes as a surprise to many to learn that THEY are the most influential teachers their kids will ever have.

Our children are like sponges. They soak up our attitudes, our habits, our speech patterns – our way of seeing the world.

So if YOU show respect for yourself, for others, for property and for the earth, you won’t go wrong.

But you can enhance or reinforce this process by instructing your kids.

Without lecturing or ‘sermonizing’ we can give guidelines for everyday activities. For example:

* leave the bathroom as you’d like to find it

* use resources like water carefully

* consider others by playing music softly or by using headphones

* give a helping hand in the classroom, in the playground, at home

* treat others with kindness, gentleness, care and sympathy

* look after yourself in the same way.

When bad or undesirable behaviour is modeled on TV or elsewhere, comment on it and discuss why we wouldn’t do that.

In a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society, let’s help our kids to tolerate, appreciate and even celebrate differences. Help them realize we all have different customs and habits, and there are pros as well as cons in these differences.

Help your child to be assertive. There’s no need to be aggressive or offensive when defending our values. We should assert them proudly and courageously, and we should avoid a passive denial when others are mocking.

Lastly there’s self-control. If you give a good example – sorry, if you ‘model appropriate behaviour’! – AND teach your kids why it is important, then you and your family can face the future with confidence.

Happy parenting!

Are You Interested in Getting a Teaching Degree?

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

If you are thinking of teaching in elementary education, middle school or high school, a teaching degree is an essential first step for starting your teaching career. Though requirements may vary from one State to another, a bachelor’s degree, whether gained on campus or online, is usually the minimum qualification to earn certification. If you possess a master’s degree, it should qualify you for more teaching positions but some teachers will strive for this advanced level later in their careers.

For you to become a certified teacher within the US public school system, you will need to obtain at least qualification equivalent to that of a bachelor’s degree. To be eligible for general licensing part of that bachelor degree has to be an acknowledged teaching program which includes a teaching internship. As there is a huge demand for qualified teachers, many programs are available to assist you to obtain licensing without a degree specifically attained in education. In the case where you possess a bachelor degree in the discipline related to what you will be teaching, licensing may be granted on that basis alone. After getting your certification, it is necessary that you continue to advance your own education at a regulated pace to maintain it. Whatever path you take to become a certified teacher, take advantage of continuing learning opportunities to remain effective and keep yourself abreast of new teaching methods.

Be it in the U.S. or anywhere else in the world, a relevant qualification must first be obtained before being able to teach in a proper institution. Currently, there are many different kinds of teaching certificate one can apply for to obtain the necessary qualifications. You should consider enrolling for an online teacher certification program if you happen to be one of those individuals who have just graduated from college with a bachelors degree or higher, but wish to transition into the world of education. This will prevent the situation where you have to return to school for a few more years and pursue a second bachelor’s degree. The biggest advantage of an online teacher certification program is to allow individuals to only study the bare necessities required for such a career change. Thus, it’s possible to launch a new career without devoting a tremendous amount of time to pursuing a second degree. These programs offer tremendous flexibility to students who feel that they have “missed the boat” with regards to pursuing a teaching career. Coupled with advanced training in curriculum development, and classroom management, it’s possible for you to become a very competent certified teacher in a relatively short amount of time.

By pursuing your teaching certification online, you don’t necessarily need to take time off from your current day job. Nor do you have to live near the program of your choice. As long as you have a computer and Internet connection, the school comes to you at times you designate. That’s because classes are all archived online, so you can study at your leisure. Do you prefer weekends or weekdays? Do you enjoy studying at Internet cafés or from the comfort of home? By enrolling in an online teacher certification program, you have tremendous control over your schedule and will be able to obtain a certified teaching degree easily!

Appropriate Use Of The Teaching Resources For Better Carving Of A Child

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

The new technology of the interactive whiteboards and their teaching resources were accepted by the teachers over a period of time. As the changes or acceptability did not happen instantly so did the advantages and disadvantages took its time to firm their feet. Most of the schools in the UK have started adapting the new technology. The schools have installed the interactive whiteboard in most of the classrooms and are imparting training to the teachers for the appropriate use of the board.

Today more than 80% of the schools have the latest technology in the classroom in the form of interactive whiteboard. Though the teachers have been given training in the usage of the interactive whiteboard it is also very crucial to select the proper teaching tool and resource. Moving further even the selection of the proper teaching resource is not sufficient the use of the resources in the correct way is the key to success.

Since the children are like raw clay, at this stage guiding them in a sensible manner in more important. Teachers should take care that they are not just displaying the teaching resource to the students but also explaining it at required points. If they fail to do so it might lead to mishandling the children. Though the resources are self explanatory it the teachers responsibility to keep control on the situation and accompany the children in the right direction. The right use of the resources can only keep the students attentive and enthusiastic towards learning and progressing.
