As children grow they are influenced by many things that cross their path in life like their parents’ words and actions, things that happen in school and other children/adult relationships with them. All these experiences, both good and bad create the thought processes that follow them throughout their adult life. Instilling faith as a belief system as they grow into young adults is very important because it instills confidence in them, even when they fail in something. Teaching children to have faith in their own ability builds confidence and is the first step in being able to act upon it. By repeating daily words of confidence to your children, discussing choices that they make, both good and bad and encouraging them to take the initiative to act upon positive thoughts, will help them believe in themselves and will encourage them to do their best. Expecting respect and giving respect to people around you is something that should be automatic, but sometimes the simplest things become complicated and misguided. The lack of faith in all people creates bitter attitudes and allows the blame game to begin. All we have control over is ourselves. As parents, we have control over our children’s development. Displaying faith through your own actions with your children will show them how important it is to believe in things without always seeing the physical evidence.

Long ago, someone made the analogy that faith is a lot like the wind. We cannot see the wind, nor can we hear the wind unless it blows against something, and we can only feel the wind when it touches our skin or rustles our hair. Faith is like that wind. We cannot see what we believe in, we cannot hear what we believe in unless we open our eyes to the truth, but we can sure feel that our faith is justified by the joy we feel in our hearts. Remember, in the end, we all put our faith in something, so let it be the truth. The old saying is, “the truth will set you free”. Having confident belief in the truth of a person, devotion to, or trust in somebody or something, especially without logical proof is what faith is all about. This all starts with the faith in oneself. With faith, one has hope, trust, love, and the certainty that all things are indeed possible. Displaying that to your children and coaching them through their formative years will enable them to develop their own faith and to be a shining example of a life well lived….

Most times when people think of continuing education they picture a college or a trade school, but really those are only a couple of possibilities and not the most common. Are you growing as an individual? Are you interested in growing, or does that thought make you yawn?

You must have some thought to self-growth; otherwise you would not be reading this article. So, how do we define personal growth? Is it the same thing as continuing education? I would say yes. I suppose you can grow without learning, but someone would have to explain that one to me.

If you are not growing, you are dieing. That is really what it comes down to. Whether you are reading a book or watching something on TV, there are lots of ways to get your brain in gear. To clarify, there are many shows on TV that are total crap, and not part of the learning I am discussing, but there are other shows where learning is ancillary to the primary focus of the show, but it is still there.

An example of this would be shows like Monster Garage or Flip That House. They are put together for the entertainment factor, but you can watch them and learn enough to know what questions to ask, or to have an idea of what you want to do with your house or car.

The ‘real’ educational shows I enjoy are things like “How It’s Made” or Ken Burn’s “The War” (on PBS.) I am not learning how to make things (‘applicable’ learning), but more mind expanding learning (abstract learning.) Either type is fine and adds to your wealth of knowledge. The point I am making is that continuing education does not need to be formal. Indeed, the best learning may be informal.

Yesterday I supervised my son in changing a tire on his bicycle. A few months ago I changed a tire and he observed and asked questions. This experiential learning gave him a lesson he will never forget. The learning we do on a regular basis is what keeps us alive, in my opinion. While we are growing in this fashion we are not giving up the will to live. The point is that learning comes in many different forms.

My own particular favorite is reading and then doing. There are a few series targeted for beginners in any subject, and those are a great way to get practical information explained in an easy to understand format. I have a few of those books, but I also have Learn HTML in 24 hours which taught me (years ago) the basis of web page design. Although most people use software to design websites, it really helped me out to know the abc’s.

I don’t want to disparage formal education by any means. I returned to college in my mid 30′s and attained my bachelor’s degree at age 41. The majority of that was abstract learning, but some of it I use on a regular basis. I have to say that community colleges are the most phenomenal institutions in this country when it comes to almost any type of learning.

Our local CC has course offerings in almost anything you might want to learn. Courses range from those aimed at helping you get your degree to yoga, fitness, alternative healing, tarot reading, photography, cooking and many more.

Don’t let yourself slowly die in your easy chair watching mindless offerings on television. Think about dreams from your early life, or things that you’ve always wondered about. You don’t even have to leave your home for many of the offerings out there. So much information is available on the internet; much of it for free! Learn how to speak Gaelic or fix that dripping faucet; how to build an airplane or play the ukulele. Don’t waste the intelligence you have. Studies have shown that using your mind can help to preserve your mental capabilities. Use it or lose it. Continuing your education isn’t a one time thing, it’s a lifetime commitment.

In more recent times, physical therapy continuing education courses focusing on training the muscles of the spine have placed a huge emphasis on Transverse Abdominius. There are differing views on the importance of this muscle.

We recently interview a spine rehab expert to get his thoughts. This is what he said.

Interviewer: Well, if we talk a little more specifically about your work, can you describe your research findings on the roles of the different muscles in spine stabilization?

Spine Rehab Expert: I knew we had to get to that one. Well, you know, we’ve heard so much about muscles like how important it is to correct transverse abdominis pathology, and the multifidus is so important and whatnot. I think there’s really a disconnect between the science and clinical practice. These muscles are no more important than any other muscles. I’ve already mentioned a couple of minutes ago that if you don’t have quadratus lumborum you can’t walk, and yet in the clinical discussion you never hear, well, very rarely would you hear a clinician talk about QL.

If you’re going to carry an object, if you’re going to plant a foot on the soccer pitch or the football field and change direction and run, if your pelvis collapses on the swing way side you’ll be a very ineffective sportsman and you’ll load up your back. So, there’s an example where quadratus lumborum is absolutely crucial.

For lifting, when you go to Russia and you study their lifting culture, they put huge emphasis on latissimus dorsi. Very rarely do I hear lifters in North America, when they’re pulling a bar, trying to bend the bar, external rotate through the shoulders and pull with latissimus dorsi, strapping and stiffening their back down to the sacrum, for example.

The role of the gluteal complex is enormous for hip extension, and particularly those who have back problems. We know those muscles tend, not in all but in a lot of people, tend to get inhibited.

So, the answer to the question is all of the muscles are important when it comes to spinal stability. They form a guide wire system that allows the spine to bear tremendous loads. It allows the spine to store and recover elastic energy when they’re throwing an object or kicking or punching, for example. Or it might be just to simply pick your groceries out of the back of the car. So, all muscles are important. How they play together is crucial. You have to recognize these patterns, measure it, and train it appropriately. But, this emphasis on single muscles, well, I think that’s dying out now as you probably have detected as you go to different meetings.

Interviewer: Right. So, just to clarify on that, we know that the transverse abdominis, for example, is not the whole answer to spinal stability. Some research -

Spine Rehab Expert: It is probably one of the most minor muscles, mind you.
